Our very own Dr. Ma. Concepcion L. Cruz was awarded the Quintin J. Gomez Award, the most prestigious award given by the Philippine Society of Anesthesiologists (PSA). The award is given to an individual who have made outstanding contributions to the science and practice of Anesthesiology and beyond, in terms of professional competence, service to PSA, International recognition, and social responsibility and consciousness. The awarding was held at Mariott Grand Ballroom last November 23, 2018 during the 50th PSA Annual Convention Opening Ceremonies.

Dr. Cruz, awarded the prestigious QJG Award
Dr. June Cathleen Castillo (Batch 2017) won third place in the 50th PSA Annual Convention Resarch Contest held at the Mariott Grand Ballroom last November 25, 2018. She presented her paper entitled, "Management of Inadvertent Dural Puncture during the Conduct of an Epidural Block among Anesthesiologists Practicing in Philippine General Hospital."
Two other papers from the department were presented by Dr. Christine Grace Suarez (Batch 2016) and Dr. Jamie Anne Yap (Batch 2016, Neuroanesthesia 2018). Dr. Suarez presented her paper entitled, "Post-operative Pain Scores of Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) Patients in the PGH: The effect of anesthetic techniques and post-operative analgesia regimen" while Dr. Yap presented her paper, "Measurement of the compliance of the Philippines General Hospital anesthesia residents to Enhanced Recovery after Surgery anesthesia protocol, a retrospective study."
Dr. Castillo wins 3rd place in PSA Research Forum
In its commitment to uphold continuous medical education, the department held its 7th Postgraduate Course, second year in a row, with the theme "Refining anesthesia through clinical pathways." It was held last July 21, 2018 at Manila Diamond Hotel.
The postgraduate course tackled common clnical scenarios and dilemmas and how to manage them based on gathered clinical evidences. The event was attended by anesthesiologists from all over the country.

7th Postgraduate Course a success
The department held the Interprofessional Education in Simulation Workshop last August 11, 2018 at the RCB-OR Complex. Professor Tham Kum Ying from Lee Kong Chian Medical School, Singapore facilitated the workshop and shared her expertise on medical simulation. Two crisis scenarios were ran through the high-fidelity mannequin. A debriefing was done after to emphasize the importance of attitude, culture and interprofessional relationship in a crisis situation.
Nurses from PACU, RCB and LCB OR Complex and Residents from the Department of Anesthesiology and Department of Surgery attended the workshop.
Multidisciplinary Simulation Workshop Held
The Patient Assessment, Testing and Education Clinic (PATEC) started its run last March 5, 2018 through the combined efforts of the Department of Medicine (headed by Dr. Deborah Ona) and the Department of Anesthesiology (headed by Dr. Grace Anne Herbosa). The clinic aims to streamline the process of preoperative evaluation, optimization and preparation of surgical patients. A dry run is being conducted on charity GS3 patients. The program will extend its services to all surgical departments soon.
The new Section of Regional Anesthesia was established last August 2017, headed by Dr. Peñafrancia Cano as the section chief. It will be a new modular rotation for the trainees to strengthen their competencies in regional anesthesia. A dedicated operating room suite for peripheral nerve blocks was also created through the efforts of Dr. Cano.
As the section is being developed, a new fellowship program for regional anesthesia is currently under review by the UP College of Medicine and is expected to become a new subspecialty training program of the department soon.

Dr. Pablo F. Lazatin III, appointed Dr. Ralph Philip Anislag as the new chief resident for 2019. He will replace Dr. Mark Andrew B. Cruz, the chief resident from 2017-2018. Congratulations!

UP-PGH Tops NCR-Luzon Tagisan ng Talino Eliminations
The annual Interesting Case Presentation was held last August 1, 2018 for the fellows and August 8, 2018 for the residents. The judges for the fellows were Dr. Annabell Chua, Dr. Grace Anne Herbosa and Dr. Anna Margarita Hilvano; while the judges for the residents were Dr. Ramon De Vera, Dr. Grace Catalan and Dr. Geraldine Raphaela Jose. Batch 2017 posted 100% passing in PBA Written Diplomate Exam
The representatives of the department won second place in the recently concluded Tagisan ng Talino National Finals organized by the Philippine Society of Anesthesiologists, Inc. held last November 28, 2017 in Crowne Plaza Hotel.
The representatives of the department are Drs. June Cathleen Castillo (3rd Year), Glenn Tan (3rd Year), Victoria Nastassa Leomo (2nd Year), Ma. Aira Matienzo (2nd Year), Raina Pia Samantha Gaoiran (1st year) and Mary Gold Piñera (1st Year). The adviser of the team is Dr. Benjamin Daniel Valera.
After a tight match with University of Santo Tomas Hospital during the sudden death portion, both teams were declared second place by the judges.
Meanwhile, Jose B. Lingad Memorial Hospital in Pampanga claimed the first prize.
